Martha Stewart and PurinaOne Help Homeless Pets...

I will make the staff post every persian in the U.S. before this is over! He he.

I will make the staff post every persian in the U.S. before this is over! He he.

I’m always happy to hear about companies that are running promotions to help pets in need and happy to pass along what we can do to maximize those companies’ donations.

Here’s a great one I learned about from the peeps at Marthastewart.com. They’ve teamed up with PurinaOne to help pets in need. PurinaOne has generously agreed to donate $1 worth of pet food to food banks across the country, up to $50,000 worth, for every pet profile Marthastewart.com users share on Facebook. It’s a great -and easy -way to help raise money for a good cause. There is no purchase necessary, no sign ups needed, only a Facebook account and a few minutes.

Here’s how it works:

1. Just visit http://www.marthastewart.com/pet-adoption before March 31, 2010 and use their search tool, powered by AdoptaPet.com, to find an adoptable animal you’d like to share with others.

2. On the pet’s profile, click the Facebook link and sign into your Facebook account if you haven’t already. You can add a note (let your friends know how you’re helping out and encourage them to do the same!) or just click “share” and you’re done.

3. Voila! You’ve just let your pals know about a pet looking for a home, and helped other pets in need from winding up in shelters, too.

By the way, there’s no limit on the number of pets you can share, so help Marthastewart.com and PurinaOne
reach their $50,000 goal by posting as often as you want.

This is the kind of promotion I like. It’s simple, it helps pets and doesn’t require a lot of time. So tell your friends! I know PurinaOne wants to give away $50K in food – let’s help them do it!

Each winner receives a $300 cash, plus generous food donation to the animal shelter or rescue of their choice, courtesy of Wellness. The winner also receives a gift basket as a great incentive for the winning pet to keep his or her resolution!

Today’s winner is Gus, a sweet orange tabby who lives in Easton, WA. Gus’s staff, Barbara Ludt, found him when he was just a teeny tiny stray kitten.

Pugsley and I are very inspired by all of these pledges.

Each lucky winner wins $300 cash, plus a generous food donation to the animal shelter or rescue of their choice, courtesy of the wonderful, pet-loving people at Wellness. The winner also receives a dog or cat gift basket with lots of treats for the winner!

Today’s winner is Bailey Bear (or B-Bear for short), a two-year-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi who lives with his owner, Karen Hom, in San Francisco, California.

Special Paw Parade this Weekend...

Tucker the Boy

Tucker the Boy

I’m excited to announce a fun event planned for this weekend!

My good pal, Brewskie Butt’s staff manager Vicki Boatright, is a fantastic artist. To celebrate her online community and the growth of her pet portrait business, Vicki is hosting a virtual “Paw Parade” on January 3, 2010 from 2 -6 p.m. EST. The parade will feature portraits of the pets Vicki has painted throughout the year, including one of my pal Tucker. Tucker manages my staff’s BFF so my staff commissioned this painting of Tucker for his staff’s birthday. Very cool, yes?

The Paw Parade will virtually march through the Canton, OH Arts District, where Vicki lives and works. The event will be based on Twitter using hashtag #Pawparade. You don’t have to be on Twitter, though. You can also go to Vicki’s blog to view her creations.

Miss Vicki has been kind enough to use this opportunity to raise money for my January Furpower beneficiary, Last Hope Animal Rescue in Long Island, NY, and enter into a drawing for a free, custom pet portrait!

You can donate to Last Hope by clicking here.

You can enter the drawing for a free custom 16″ X 20″ single animal pet portrait by leaving a comment on Vicki’s blog, at http://bit.ly/7cB3wF, explaining why you would like your animal painted by BZTAT (that’s Vicki’s supercool artist’s handle).

No purchase or donation is necessary to enter. Winner will be drawn randomly from all entries.

Again here are the details:

Date: Sunday, January 3, 2010
Time: 2 pm – 6 pm EST
Twitter Hashtag: #PawParade
Where: Virtual Parade Route thru the Canton, OH Arts District via Twitter
Grand Marshal–Brewskie Butt

It will be fun to see all of Vicki’s pet creations on display!

Hilary and friends!

Hilary and friends!

Way to go, Iams! I am sure you have all heard about the Iams’ Home 4 the Holidays adoption event, which is a season-long effort by Iams and spokesperson Hilary Swank to help shelters and rescues adopt out more pets during the holidays. They are working with participating organizations across the U.S. to promote adoption. In fact, I even caught my staff online searching for “male persian cats near charlotte, nc.” Ummmmm….not sure what this means or how I feel about it. She told me, “Oh, HUSH. I’m just looking.” Hmmm.

Anyway, as of today, 808,147 pets have found forever homes through Iams Home 4 the Holidays shelters and rescue groups. AMAZING. Just AMAZING.

If you are thinking about adopting or know someone who is thinking about adopting, now is the time! Do it! TODAY! Visit the Home for the Holidays site and search for furbabies near you who need homes.

I had the good fortune of meeting Hilary Swank via Skype not

Friday Shelter Appreciation Activities...

Vicki at her easel

Vicki at her easel

Thanks to everyone who has been sharing how you’re celebrating National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, which is sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States.

As you all know, I’ve teamed up with Big Paw Designs and Peoplepets.com to encourage everyone to find ways to celebrate our local rescues and shelters and to let them know how much we love and appreciate all they do! So do anything you can – no matter how big or small – to show them you care.

I wish the week lasted longer because there are so many people I want to showcase who are doing awesome things. There are some wonderful people I wanted to tell you about who are doing awesome things for their local shelters.

Vicki Boatright, an artist in Canton, Ohio (and @brewksiebutt’s mom), is opening up her art studio tonight for Canton’s monthly First Friday gallery walk event. Tonight she is doing something special and hosting her local rescue, Friends of the Pound of Stark County, and some adoptable dogs in her studio during the gallery walk. Brewskie is not that excited about having dogs in his staff’s studio but he’ll tolerate it for the good of the animals.

Cody Keith in Austin

Cody Keith in Austin

Cody Keith, of Cody Keith Design in Austin, Texas, and a team of friends and colleagues are rallying together to help rebuild Centex Humane Society in Killeen, Texas, whose facility was recently devastated by a fire. Cody and his friends are also helping solicit donations and volunteers and are working on a design idea for a memorial for the pets that were lost in the fire.

Generous reader Ginger Geronimo and her mom put together two big boxes of wishlist items like towels, treats, toys, office supplies, a flashlight and more to donate to the Greater Birmingham Humane Society.

Ginger's sweet furbaby, Twinkle

Ginger's sweet furbaby, Twinkle

Countless others of you volunteer and donate on a regular basis and support and cheer on our wonderful shelters and rescues all the time. I want to recognize your ongoing efforts too!

Together we can make a difference. Thank you all for participating and reading and for your continued support of animals. WE LOVE YOU GUYS!
