Smart Ways to Help Shelters

December 4, 2009

Shannon, who works very hard to support her local shelter (and our November FURPOWER recipient), Nine Lives Foundation, wrote me about a great idea she came up with to help with shelter supplies.

Shannon's bosses, Cruiser and Jaspur. Adorable!

Shannon belongs to her local YMCA, and they supply towels for members in the facility. Because of high usage, the towels wear out quickly and the facility is frequently buying new ones to replace the ones that are fraying or have holes or stains.

Shannon made a deal with YMCA to collect the towels being replaced to donate to Nine Lives – they go through tons of towels a month with all those kitties! Shannon has two huge black hefty bags full of old clean towels that YMCA couldn’t use anymore and she’s taking them to Nine Lives today.

Other shelters should check with local gyms or fitness facilities to see if they can make a similar arrangement!

This is a great example of thinking creatively to find ways, small and large, to help our local organizations. Shannon is a real genius!

One would almost think she’s a cat…..

We take old towels and blankets to our local rescue group. We never thought of asking YMCA for their old ones though. We’ll have to check into that. What a great idea!

Wow that really is a great idea! I never would have thought of it – I hope that other shelters see this and try it out!

Towels are always appreciated. We also have a great group in our community called Knitters for Critters (http://knittersforcritters.com). They provide handmade blankets for all the local shelters, and they do great work.
