Tags: animal shelter, halloween, maskFriends! Sunday is the start of National Animal Shelter Awareness Week, which runs from November 1-7. This weekend is a great time to go visit your shelter or rescue and do something nice!
Big Paw Designs and I are partnering to ask you to show your local shelter or rescue how much you appreciate them. Please go and do something nice for your local organization. Hold kittens! Bring old towels! Buy a bag of dog food! Foster a furbaby! Give them a million dollars! Do SOMETHING to show you recognize their hard work. I did a post on things shelters need that might give you some ideas.
And, email me and tell me about what you did and send along a photo of you at the shelter, if possible or even just you. Big Paw Designs and I will be featuring stories of kindness and giving on our blogs and Facebook pages all next week. Each day, one lucky winner will win a Rescue Mom or Rescue Dad magnet, courtesy of Big Paw Designs.
JUST IMAGINE what we can all do if we each do a little bit! That’s FURPOWER at its best. Please participate in this challenge because even the smallest gesture counts. Our staff plans to visit our local shelter and bring some items they need plus spend time with the animals.
This is the first time we’ve had a wake up tactic submitted by chickens.
The chicks and their kitty friend’s staff Carolyn writes:
These peeping wonders have imprinted on one of our more sanguine resident rescue Persians, Lobo (short for “Lobotomy”). Hilarious. This cat is so laid back, you could literally lob grenades at him, and he wouldn’t flinch. But he did meow most plaintively when they would try to nestle under him. Poor kitty!
For a while, they would even try to roost on him. Now, everybody just hangs out at the coop when not eating or sleeping inside. Definitely a peaceable kingdom.
But the most traditional of wake up tactics comes from Lobo and the Chickos:
“Silly Romeo! It’s the oldest trick in the book–you just crow.”
I am so glad we had an opportunity to showcase the true wake up pioneers – chickens! I wonder what a “crow” would sound like coming out of my meower?
Started out with normal nosing and nudging. I kinda enjoy this part. Then, put paw on female staff member’s forehead. She saw the light and got me BREAKFAST!
Tags: nosing, nudging, paw, wake upHave you ever tried to run across a stack of magazines? This does not work. Today I was not even meaning to wake up staff (yet) and was only chasing Pugsley through the room. Ran over magazines lying on floor (which I want to know WHY were they even there?) and skidded across them into dresser. Made loud BOOM and heard staff say, “What the X#$% is going on down there?!”
But soonafter I got BREAKFAST and so maybe all worth it.
Wednesday Wake up Tactic is sponsored by Big Paw Designs who has generously agreed to donate a portion of today’s sales to our FURPOWER recipient, Persian and Himalayan Cat Rescue. Thanks, Big Paw!
I am so happy to announce a fun (and worthwhile!) event that my friends at Big Paw Designs and I have cooked up.
Next week, November 1-7, is National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week. Big Paw Designs, Pugsley and I are asking all of YOU to show your local shelter or rescue how much you appreciate them by donating your time, money, support or goods. It can be as simple as donating a bag of dog food, taking them your extra old towels or playing with kittens for an hour. The point is to do something. Many of you do things on a regular basis anyway so tell us about what you do to support them and that certainly counts too.
We all know the wonderful people who work and volunteer at shelters work their tails off day in and day out. We often take them for granted so let’s show them our appreciation!
Our challenge to you is to go do something between now and November 7th and then email us about it. We’ll feature all of your good deeds every day here and on the Big Paw Designs blog and maybe some other places as well (we’ll let you know where; could be exciting!)
And, in addition to featuring you, all submissions will be entered into a drawing for your choice of a Rescue Mom or Rescue Dad car magnet or sticker, courtesy of Big Paw Designs. We’ll choose a new winner every day!
Imagine what we can all do if we each do a little bit. We are so excited to feature all of your wonderful activities. My friend Bailey the Bichon did something similar for her birthday last year – her requested gift was that everyone do something nice for their local shelters. It was a great birthday hit. And very worthwhile.
Go Shelters! Go Rescues, Go YOU!
xoxo

Tags: breakfast, floofy face, wake upPositioned self across female staff member’s arm. Nosed her ear over and over and over again. Stopped for a moment to scratchscratchscratchscratchscratchscratchscratch own ear. Then, got back to nosing. Oh, made sure to purr the whole time. Loudly.
Tags: animal rescue, ears, Monday, wake upAs a big THANK YOU to everyone who has been donating (we’re well over $2K now plus our $1K match from Nutrish!) Patrice DeAvila is upgrading her lovely gift to a free 24×36 custom portrait. We’ll be doing a drawing from donors at the end of the month. Thank you Patrice and everyone who has given their time, money, support and energy to helping animals! xoxo.
Here are some more examples of Patrice’s gorgeous work.
As you know this month we are supporting Persian and Himalayan Cat Rescue in San Francisco and N. California.
Patrice Deavila, who nominated PHCR, is a very talented artist. She has offered a custom relief 5×5 print as a special drawing prize we’ll be doing from among the individuals who donate this month. It can either be with clothes or without (ooo, that sounds kinda racy, doesn’t it?). Here are some examples.
All you have to do is donate even $1 any time before the end of the month and you’ll be entered. You can make a donation via Firstgiving, Paypal or by check here.
Check out Patrice’s blog to learn more about her and her passion for art and animals!
Thanks for your ongoing support of FURPOWER!
